Two years ago, Bob Thiel left Living Church of God and started Continuing Church of God. He seems to indicate that he thinks he is a prophet, though he does not often outright say, "I am a prophet". To my knowledge, he has never been given a direct prophetic message from God to deliver to the Church, a message that can be verified by its future fulfillment. "When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him" (Deuteronomy 18:22).
He left LCG because of his disagreements with some LCG doctrines (minor doctrines, I think), and also he may have left to form Continuing Church of God because he believes he is a prophet. Whether he would have left Living Church of God to start Continuing Church of God if he did not think he was a prophet, only he can answer. Part of the reason he thinks he is a prophet seems to be that an ordained minister in LCG, Mr. Gaylyn Bonjour, anointed him for some "non-debilitating matters" (a minor physical illness or injury I would presume) and asked God to give him a double portion of His Holy Spirit. It is an unanswered question if he would have left LCG eventually over his disagreements even if Mr. Bonjour did not mention a double portion of God's Spirit. In any case, that is what has happened.
If an ordained minister anoints a man and asks God to give him a double portion of the Holy Spirit, does that make that man a prophet?
The only place a double portion of the Spirit is mentioned is in the account of Elijah passing his office, and gifts, to Elisha, and both Elijah and Elisha were prophets. Here is the account: "And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, 'Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?' Elisha said, 'Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.' So he said, 'You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.' " (2 Kings 2:9-10).
Because of this passage, and because an ordained minister asked God to give Bob Thiel a double portion of His Spirit, Dr. Thiel seems to think he has been ordained as a prophet.
But that is not the only place a "double portion" is mentioned in the Bible. That term is used for the inheritance that a firstborn son would receive from his father. "But he shall acknowledge the son of the unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his" (Deuteronomy 21:17).
The phrase "double portion" can refer to inheritance or the passing on of something from one to another.
That is why Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah's spirit. He was asking that Elijah's office, miracle working power, and prophetic gifts be passed on to him, in full, as if it were an inheritance figuratively speaking passed from father to firstborn son. In the culture of the day, when all Israelites knew that the firstborn son should receive a double portion of the inheritance from his father, Elijah understood exactly what Elisha was asking. He was asking for the same gifts Elijah had, in full.
Was Elisha asking for the office of prophet? NO, absolutely not! How do I know this? God already told Elijah that Elisha would be prophet in Elijah's place. "So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?' And he said, 'I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.' Then the Lord said to him: 'Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.' " (1 Kings 19:13-16).
Notice something very important in this passage. God specifically told Elijah that Elisha would be prophet in Elijah's place. From that point on, Elijah KNEW that Elisha was to be prophet. Remember that. There could be no doubt in Elijah's mind that Elisha was to be prophet in his place. God had told him.
Then, if that was all Elisha was asking, why would Elijah say, "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so."?
Was Elijah doubting God's word? Did he forget what God had told him, that Elisha would be prophet after Elijah?
No. The explanation is that Elijah knew that Elisha was not asking for the office of prophet. Elisha already had that. He was asking for something else. He was asking that all the spiritual gifts and power that Elijah had as prophet, including miracle working power, be given to Elisha in full, that Elisha would not have less power or fewer gifts than Elijah had.
It is one thing to have the office of prophet. It is something else to have all the gifts of a major prophet like Elijah including the gift of working miracles. There were many prophets in the Bible who never had all the spiritual gifts that God had given to Elijah.
So in this case, a "double portion" of Elijah's spirit did not refer to the receiving of the office of prophet at all.
And right here we can notice a difference between what happened with Elijah and Elisha and what happened with Mr. Bonjour and Bob Thiel. Elisha was asking that the gifts Elijah had be given to him also. In that case, Elijah was a prophet with great miracle working gifts and Elisha would not only be prophet but would have the same miracle working gifts Elijah had. But no such passing of a gift of miracles or prophecy was possible from Gayland Bonjour to Bob Thiel because Gayland Bonjour was never a prophet nor did he have any special gift of working miracles. He had no prophetic gift to pass on, as if by inheritance symbolically. Gayland Bonjour was only a pastor.
Remember, the phrase "double portion" refers to the passing on of something from father to firstborn son, and can symbolically refer to the passing on of gifts and offices from one person to another. No such passing on could occur from Mr. Bonjour to Dr. Thiel, unless it was only the office of pastor, because Mr. Bonjour did not have anything more than the office of pastor to pass on to Dr. Thiel.
The fact is, Gayland Bonjour never had the authority to ordain anyone a prophet. I don't think it was his intention to do so. The "double portion" wording of his prayer is a reference the use of that term in the Bible, and that is a reference to inheritance, the passing on of something from one to another as from father to son, metaphorically speaking. That is how Elisha used the term with Elijah, and Elijah understood the analogy and what Elisha was asking. One could say that Gayland Bonjour did not ask that a "double portion" of his spirit be given to Bob Thiel, but that a double portion of God's Spirit be given. But that only highlights the fact that this is different from the occasion in the Bible with Elijah and Elisha. Elisha referred to the double portion as Elijah's spirit because it was the specific gifts that Elijah had - miracles and prophecies - that Elisha was asking for.
Moreover, just asking for something does not make it so.
After Elisha made his request, Elijah did not assume Elisha would receive what he asked for. Rather, Elijah knew it was God's call, yes or no, and that Elisha might not be granted his request. "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so" (2 Kings 2:10).
But afterwards, it appeared that he did receive his request, and it was verified with the sons of the prophets who saw the proof (Kings 2:11-15).
Nothing like that has happened with Bob Thiel.
Just because Gayland Bonjour asked God to give Dr. Thiel a double portion of the Holy Spirit, whatever that might mean in this case, does not mean God said, "yes".
Consider healing, which is what anointing that a pastor does is usually for. Does God always heal? Sometimes God reserves the timing to Himself and does not heal right away. But sometimes He does not heal at all. As Mr. Armstrong pointed out, there are conditions for healing.
There is a promise of healing (James 5:14-15), but I challenge you to find one promise of God in the Bible that He will make a man a prophet if a minister requests a double portion of the Holy Spirit be upon him.
Anyone can request the office of prophet, but God will only grant that office if it is His will. Making a request does not make it God's will.
No, being anointed by a minister who asks that a double portion of God's Spirit be given to the man does not make that man a prophet of God.
Moreover, even if a man makes prophetic statements that come true, that does not make him a true prophet. Even if that man is able to predict the future, he must be consistent in his teaching with God's word, and if not, he is a not a true prophet though he may be a false one (Deuteronomy 13:1-3). Christ warned of false prophets who would work signs and wonders, but would deceive many (Matthew 24:4-5, 24). He said we would know false prophets by their fruits (Matthew 7:15-20).
If sometime in the future Bob Thiel or some other man makes prophetic predictions that come true, we must still judge if the man is a true or false prophet based on overall fruits.
Those are the criteria for knowing a true prophet that God gives in the Bible. Not whether an ordained pastor asks God to give a man a double portion of the Holy Spirit.
To sum up, Elisha was not asking for office of prophet when he referred to a "double portion" of Elijah's spirit, otherwise Elijah would not have told him that he might not receive it. Elisha already had the office of prophet - God had already guaranteed that and Elijah knew it. He was asking for ALL the gifts, including miracle working power, that Elijah had to be given him. Moreover, just making the request did not make it so, for Elijah knew that God could say, "no". Likewise, God could say no to Gayland Bonjour's request for a double portion of God's Spirit for Bob Thiel no matter what Mr. Bonjour and Bob Thiel had in mind, just as God can say no to a request for healing or to some other request if it is not God's will to grant the request. In the matter of being made a prophet, God never promised such an office upon request or anointing anyway. Finally, the "double portion" refers symbolically to the passing on of something from one to another. Mr. Bonjour had no such prophetic office or gifts to pass on to anyone. And if the passing on of such gifts, as if by inheritance, was to be from God Himself to Bob Thiel, only God can make that call, not Mr. Bonjour.
Making a request for a double portion of God's Spirit, or making a request for the office of prophet, does not guarantee God will grant the request. It may not be His will.
The whole matter of Mr. Bonjour anointing Bob Thiel to be prophet is ridiculous anyway because Mr. Bonjour never intended to anoint Bob Thiel as prophet.
And if the anointing Dr. Thiel received from Mr. Bonjour did not make him a prophet (it did not), then on what basis does Dr. Thiel think he is a prophet? Has he received a prophetic message from God for delivery to the Church predicting some future event that can be verified? God is not the author of confusion. God knows He has commanded us to "prove all things" (1 Thessalonians 5:21). God does not expect us to accept people's claims without proof, without evidence. If God wanted us to know that Bob Thiel is a prophet, God would give us the evidence. I know of no such evidence.
And if Bob Thiel is not a prophet, why did he break away from Living Church of God to start a new fellowship over disagreements about minor doctrinal issues? Would he have left LCG anyway even if he knew he is not a prophet?

The Right Way to Trust Ministers
In the past I have often emphasized the need for Church of God members to trust God more than the ministry in matters of doctrine, to believe the Bible more than Church of God teachings when there is a difference.
But there is a right way to trust the ministry.
God does not command that we trust ministers or any human being on earth today. Rather, the Bible teaches us to trust God, not any man. "Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help" (Psalm 146:3). "Thus says the Lord: 'Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord...Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord' " (Jeremiah 17:5-7). "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes" (Psalm 118:8-9). "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5).
Yet, God does teach that we are to highly esteem ministers and respect their authority and their office. "And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves" (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13). See also Philippians 2:29-30 and Hebrews 13:17. A certain amount of trust can be part of that esteem.
But there is a difference between the trust we put in people and the trust we put in God, and we need to understand that difference.
The trust the Bible speaks about when God teaches us to trust God, not man, is an absolute trust. We are to trust God one hundred percent. We are to trust both the Father and Christ one hundred percent. They are perfect. They never sin. They do not make mistakes. They have all knowledge, understanding, and wisdom for making decisions, and their righteousness is infinite. The word of God, the Bible, is perfect. It is infallibly true. As Christ said, scripture cannot be broken (John 10:35).
Our trust in God is based on faith that God is perfect and will never lie to us or let us down. He will be faithful to His promises. God cannot lie (Titus 1:2, Hebrews 6:18).
That kind of sure, absolute trust should be given to God as part of loving Him with all our being (Mark 12:29-30). And only God should be trusted that way. We should never trust any human being with that kind of absolute trust. We should never believe that any human being can be trusted NEVER to sin or make a mistake.
Yet there is a kind of trust, if you want to call it "trust", that we can have in other people. It is a limited kind of trust, based on our knowledge of people's character and abilities. We can trust people to a limited degree, depending on how well we know them and how well their fruits - their past track record - shows that they are likely to be trustworthy. If we know a person well, if he has a good track record of righteous behavior, we can trust that it is very unlikely he will betray us. Yet, we can know that there is always a chance he will surprise our expectations.
Husbands and wives in a good marriage often trust each other to be faithful, based on their knowledge of each other's character and the strength of their love for each other. An employer will often trust his best employees to do their jobs well because he has observed for a long time that they have done their jobs well in the past. That kind of trust - the expectation that it is extremely unlikely that the other person will let us down - is not wrong.
We are to judge by fruits (Matthew 7:15-20). The Bible has examples of men and women being chosen for service based on their fruits, their reputation, and their character (1 Timothy 3:1-13, Titus 1:5-9, Exodus 18:21, Acts 6:3). Choosing a man for a position of leadership indicates a certain trust that the man will fulfill his responsibilities well. It is not wrong to develop positive expectations about a person based on our past experience with him or her, and to rely on that person to a degree. Relying on another human being based on our positive expectation, which in turn is based on our experience with that person, can be called "trust". But it is trust on the human level, limited - not the absolute trust we place in God.
God Himself will show trust in us when He gives us eternal life in His kingdom in the resurrection. God will trust us with eternal life when He knows we will never rebel against Him. The positions of kings and priests God will give us in His kingdom are positions of trust.
There is a kind of "working trust" we exercise in order to function and work with other people. It is a trust based on our estimation that it is unlikely (not impossible) that the other person will cheat us or hurt us.
I trust the cashier at a store when I pay for something with a large denomination bill that he or she will give me the correct change and not cheat me. Yet, I know it is possible. So why do I trust? I trust that it is very unlikely that the cashier will cheat me. I also measure the risk, and I conclude the matter is small enough that it is not worth worrying about. I give him or her the benefit of the doubt, and trust that I will not be cheated.
When I am crossing an intersection, walking with the light, I trust that the drivers of the cars waiting for the light to change will not suddenly drive their cars over me for the pleasure of running me down. I don't say it is impossible, but it is so unlikely that I do not worry about it.
Likewise, there is a certain degree of trust between people working together. The greater the trust, the better the working relationship.
The level of trust we have in someone varies according to the person's character and ability and how well we know him or her. Some people we trust more and some we trust less.
But strong trust in a person must be based on past fruits. In that sense, people sometimes must earn our trust before we can trust them very much. And they sometimes do the opposite. They earn our distrust if they show by their actions that they are not trustworthy.
Both trust and distrust in other human beings come in degrees, and both are based on past fruits, good or bad.
How do ministers fit into this?
We can trust ministers, to a degree, based on their past faithfulness, their good fruits, their good track record. It is a limited trust, never the absolute trust we have in God. We can have positive expectations that the minister will do his job well and is very likely to do the right thing, to teach the right things, and to make the right decisions, if we have seen and known him to do the right things in the past.
Ministers can earn trust as they show good fruits over time. Unfortunately, some ministers destroy trust by acts of unfaithfulness or serious mistakes. Those we tend to distrust.
It can be a beautiful thing when a minister, by his ability, wisdom, and faithfulness, develops in those who know him a positive expectation that he will most likely continue to act wisely and righteously. And there is nothing wrong for members to feel that way about a minister. They know it is not impossible for him to sin or make mistakes. But they judge that it is very unlikely for him to make a serious mistake or seriously sin in a decision or matter involving the members. So the members have a good relationship with the minister and are not afraid to communicate with the minister and to value his advice. That kind of relationship benefits the whole Church of God. It makes the minister's job easier and it benefits the members also.
And yet, trust in God and the Bible must come first. If an occasion arises when the minister seems to make a mistake in his teachings - if he says something that seems to be contrary to the Bible - the members should believe the Bible first. Yet, while believing the Bible first, they should not belittle or contradict the minister in conversation with other members, but rather support the office of the minister and his authority to teach.
This is where too many members go off into the ditch. One ditch is to believe whatever the minister says, even if the minister seems to contradict what the member sees in the Bible. But the other ditch is to openly contradict the minister when talking with other members, spreading one's own view of the scriptures contrary to what the Church teaches. That is not the member's job. His job is to believe what God says in the Bible, to obey the ministry except when the ministry tells him to break the law of God, and to respect and highly esteem the ministry, as much as he can in view of the minister's fruits, and to respect the office in any case.
Everyone has the job of believing God's word, the Bible. Everyone has the job of serving and doing God's work in one form or another, even if it is only in prayer. Everyone has the job of obeying God first. But not everyone has the job of teaching the members and determining what that teaching is. It is the ordained ministry, under the supervision of the top leadership in the Church, which is under Christ the head of the Church, that ONLY has the job of determining what set of doctrines and details of doctrines will be taught by the Church to the members. Individual members have not been given that job. They may teach fellow members only within the context of what the Church has set as doctrine, within the fellowship they attend.
Will the leadership and ministry sometimes make mistakes in their teaching and thus teach some error to the membership? Yes, because they are human. But it is not the job of any member to correct those mistakes with the brethren in the fellowship he attends. Members all have their Bibles. If a doctrine is truly a mistake, they can find the truth as God guides their understanding of the Bible. And God can correct the ministry in time.
But just as we should not undermine the authority of the ministry and undermine the office God has given them by contradicting them in matters of doctrine, likewise we should not undermine the working trust members may have in their ministers.
At Sabbath services, with the brethren in the fellowship we attend, we should not be saying things like, "Well, you can't trust the ministers".
It is the attitude and tone that is important here. We should not build an atmosphere of distrust in the congregation we attend. There is nothing wrong with explaining to someone, when necessary, that all humans are fallible, we all make mistakes, and only God should be trusted completely and absolutely, and we should believe what God says in the Bible first. There is nothing wrong, if the subject comes up, with telling other members that as a general principle you will believe the Bible more than the ministry if you see something in the Bible that is different from what the minister teaches.
But just as it is wrong to openly contradict and criticize the ministry over a doctrine, it is wrong to openly try to build an atmosphere of DIS-trust towards the ministry in a congregation by making insinuating and disrespectful remarks against trusting the ministry. If you do that, you make it more difficult for members to respect and esteem the ministry as we are commanded to do (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13). In effect, you are tempting them to disrespect the ministry, and you could be leading them into sin, into resentment, bitterness, and rebellion. Then you become guilty. "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!" (Matthew 18:6-7).
If you have a problem with a minister that you cannot overlook, you are not sinning by taking it to headquarters, or you can just take it to God in prayer and wait for Him to handle it. But don't spread it around. That is not God's way.
We are commanded to respect authority, to respect and esteem the office, and we should never weaken the office and authority of one God has placed over us as long as we are in the fellowship that man has authority over. We should not speak against him with other members, in other words. We should not promote disrespect towards the pastor of the congregation we attend with other members. That is not our job. We should not tell other members, "Well, I don't trust our pastor", or "I don't trust our leader at headquarters". Distrust can be an attitude, and we should not promote an attitude of distrust in the congregation.
There may be a time when we may have to simply affirm that we trust God and the Bible absolutely, and while we respect and love the ministry, we know that they are not perfect and that they can make mistakes. But we should not belittle, contradict, and talk down the ministers in the fellowship we attend.
If a minister has a serious problem that must be dealt with, take it to the people who have authority to solve the problem. Take it to headquarters. Don't spread it among the members.
One of my favorite movies is the Caine Mutiny. My favorite scene in that movie is near the end, when defense attorney Barney Greenwald (played by a young Jose Ferrer) tells the officers of the Caine, who were not very supportive of their captain, "...you don't work with a captain because you like the way he parts his hair. You work with him because he's got the job, or you're no good."
Even people in the world can understand that principle better than some members in the Church of God.
If a minister has a faithful track record, you can give him a certain level of trust based on his past faithfulness. And if not, then you may not trust him so much in the future. But don't talk him down with other members. Don't take upon yourself the job of weakening his authority in the eyes of the other members as long as you are in his congregation. That is rebellion, according to everything I have seen in the Bible.
What if the pastor or top leader is so far off-base that you cannot speak respectfully of him? What if the leader of the fellowship you attend is a false leader that is hurting the members spiritually, not helping them, but leading them astray? Then I would think that is not a congregation or a fellowship you would want to stay in. If I were in that situation, I would leave quickly and quietly. I would find a leader and a fellowship that is more faithful.

The Bible has examples of men and women being chosen for service based on their fruits, their reputation, and their character (1 Timothy 3:1-13, Titus 1:5-9, Exodus 18:21, Acts 6:3). Choosing a man for a position of leadership indicates a certain trust that the man will fulfill his responsibilities well. It is not wrong to develop positive expectations about a person based on our past experience with him or her, and to rely on that person to a degree. Relying on another human being based on our positive expectation, which in turn is based on our experience with that person, can be called "trust". But it is trust on the human level, limited - not the absolute trust we place in God.
God Himself will show trust in us when He gives us eternal life in His kingdom in the resurrection. God will trust us with eternal life when He knows we will never rebel against Him. The positions of kings and priests God will give us in His kingdom are positions of trust.
There is a kind of "working trust" we exercise in order to function and work with other people. It is a trust based on our estimation that it is unlikely (not impossible) that the other person will cheat us or hurt us.
I trust the cashier at a store when I pay for something with a large denomination bill that he or she will give me the correct change and not cheat me. Yet, I know it is possible. So why do I trust? I trust that it is very unlikely that the cashier will cheat me. I also measure the risk, and I conclude the matter is small enough that it is not worth worrying about. I give him or her the benefit of the doubt, and trust that I will not be cheated.
When I am crossing an intersection, walking with the light, I trust that the drivers of the cars waiting for the light to change will not suddenly drive their cars over me for the pleasure of running me down. I don't say it is impossible, but it is so unlikely that I do not worry about it.
Likewise, there is a certain degree of trust between people working together. The greater the trust, the better the working relationship.
The level of trust we have in someone varies according to the person's character and ability and how well we know him or her. Some people we trust more and some we trust less.
But strong trust in a person must be based on past fruits. In that sense, people sometimes must earn our trust before we can trust them very much. And they sometimes do the opposite. They earn our distrust if they show by their actions that they are not trustworthy.
Both trust and distrust in other human beings come in degrees, and both are based on past fruits, good or bad.
How do ministers fit into this?
We can trust ministers, to a degree, based on their past faithfulness, their good fruits, their good track record. It is a limited trust, never the absolute trust we have in God. We can have positive expectations that the minister will do his job well and is very likely to do the right thing, to teach the right things, and to make the right decisions, if we have seen and known him to do the right things in the past.
Ministers can earn trust as they show good fruits over time. Unfortunately, some ministers destroy trust by acts of unfaithfulness or serious mistakes. Those we tend to distrust.
It can be a beautiful thing when a minister, by his ability, wisdom, and faithfulness, develops in those who know him a positive expectation that he will most likely continue to act wisely and righteously. And there is nothing wrong for members to feel that way about a minister. They know it is not impossible for him to sin or make mistakes. But they judge that it is very unlikely for him to make a serious mistake or seriously sin in a decision or matter involving the members. So the members have a good relationship with the minister and are not afraid to communicate with the minister and to value his advice. That kind of relationship benefits the whole Church of God. It makes the minister's job easier and it benefits the members also.
And yet, trust in God and the Bible must come first. If an occasion arises when the minister seems to make a mistake in his teachings - if he says something that seems to be contrary to the Bible - the members should believe the Bible first. Yet, while believing the Bible first, they should not belittle or contradict the minister in conversation with other members, but rather support the office of the minister and his authority to teach.
This is where too many members go off into the ditch. One ditch is to believe whatever the minister says, even if the minister seems to contradict what the member sees in the Bible. But the other ditch is to openly contradict the minister when talking with other members, spreading one's own view of the scriptures contrary to what the Church teaches. That is not the member's job. His job is to believe what God says in the Bible, to obey the ministry except when the ministry tells him to break the law of God, and to respect and highly esteem the ministry, as much as he can in view of the minister's fruits, and to respect the office in any case.
Everyone has the job of believing God's word, the Bible. Everyone has the job of serving and doing God's work in one form or another, even if it is only in prayer. Everyone has the job of obeying God first. But not everyone has the job of teaching the members and determining what that teaching is. It is the ordained ministry, under the supervision of the top leadership in the Church, which is under Christ the head of the Church, that ONLY has the job of determining what set of doctrines and details of doctrines will be taught by the Church to the members. Individual members have not been given that job. They may teach fellow members only within the context of what the Church has set as doctrine, within the fellowship they attend.
Will the leadership and ministry sometimes make mistakes in their teaching and thus teach some error to the membership? Yes, because they are human. But it is not the job of any member to correct those mistakes with the brethren in the fellowship he attends. Members all have their Bibles. If a doctrine is truly a mistake, they can find the truth as God guides their understanding of the Bible. And God can correct the ministry in time.
But just as we should not undermine the authority of the ministry and undermine the office God has given them by contradicting them in matters of doctrine, likewise we should not undermine the working trust members may have in their ministers.
At Sabbath services, with the brethren in the fellowship we attend, we should not be saying things like, "Well, you can't trust the ministers".
It is the attitude and tone that is important here. We should not build an atmosphere of distrust in the congregation we attend. There is nothing wrong with explaining to someone, when necessary, that all humans are fallible, we all make mistakes, and only God should be trusted completely and absolutely, and we should believe what God says in the Bible first. There is nothing wrong, if the subject comes up, with telling other members that as a general principle you will believe the Bible more than the ministry if you see something in the Bible that is different from what the minister teaches.
But just as it is wrong to openly contradict and criticize the ministry over a doctrine, it is wrong to openly try to build an atmosphere of DIS-trust towards the ministry in a congregation by making insinuating and disrespectful remarks against trusting the ministry. If you do that, you make it more difficult for members to respect and esteem the ministry as we are commanded to do (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13). In effect, you are tempting them to disrespect the ministry, and you could be leading them into sin, into resentment, bitterness, and rebellion. Then you become guilty. "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!" (Matthew 18:6-7).
If you have a problem with a minister that you cannot overlook, you are not sinning by taking it to headquarters, or you can just take it to God in prayer and wait for Him to handle it. But don't spread it around. That is not God's way.
We are commanded to respect authority, to respect and esteem the office, and we should never weaken the office and authority of one God has placed over us as long as we are in the fellowship that man has authority over. We should not speak against him with other members, in other words. We should not promote disrespect towards the pastor of the congregation we attend with other members. That is not our job. We should not tell other members, "Well, I don't trust our pastor", or "I don't trust our leader at headquarters". Distrust can be an attitude, and we should not promote an attitude of distrust in the congregation.
There may be a time when we may have to simply affirm that we trust God and the Bible absolutely, and while we respect and love the ministry, we know that they are not perfect and that they can make mistakes. But we should not belittle, contradict, and talk down the ministers in the fellowship we attend.
If a minister has a serious problem that must be dealt with, take it to the people who have authority to solve the problem. Take it to headquarters. Don't spread it among the members.
One of my favorite movies is the Caine Mutiny. My favorite scene in that movie is near the end, when defense attorney Barney Greenwald (played by a young Jose Ferrer) tells the officers of the Caine, who were not very supportive of their captain, "...you don't work with a captain because you like the way he parts his hair. You work with him because he's got the job, or you're no good."
Even people in the world can understand that principle better than some members in the Church of God.
If a minister has a faithful track record, you can give him a certain level of trust based on his past faithfulness. And if not, then you may not trust him so much in the future. But don't talk him down with other members. Don't take upon yourself the job of weakening his authority in the eyes of the other members as long as you are in his congregation. That is rebellion, according to everything I have seen in the Bible.
What if the pastor or top leader is so far off-base that you cannot speak respectfully of him? What if the leader of the fellowship you attend is a false leader that is hurting the members spiritually, not helping them, but leading them astray? Then I would think that is not a congregation or a fellowship you would want to stay in. If I were in that situation, I would leave quickly and quietly. I would find a leader and a fellowship that is more faithful.

"No one may buy or sell except one who has the mark..."
The quote that is the title of this post is from Revelation 13:17. Here is a full quote and some of the context: "Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men....He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name" (Revelation 13:11-17).
What will be the mark of the beast? Some have suggested it will be Sunday because the Sabbath is a true sign between God and His people and they feel the mark of the beast will be a counterfeit of that sign. That is certainly possible, yet the Bible does not say definitely that Sunday will be the mark of the beast.
Whatever that mark is, without that mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name, men will not be able to buy or sell (Revelation 13:16-17). But what is the connection between the mark of the beast and being able to buy and sell? Or to put it another way, how will those refusing the mark of the beast be prevented from buying and selling?
Some of those who teach that Sunday will be the mark of the beast have reasoned that unless you rest on Sunday and work on the Sabbath you will not be able to hold a job and will have no money to buy and sell. But there must be more to it than that. Just keeping the Sabbath will not make it impossible, by itself, to buy or sell. There would have to be some enforcement mechanism.
You don't have to work on the Sabbath to make money, to have money to buy things, even if most employers require their full-time workers to work on the Sabbath. There has always been the need for part-time workers in different parts of the economy who will work only a few days a week. Those who have businesses or are self-employed can often choose their own hours. All work is not done on Saturday. If you are a roofer and a windstorm blows the shingles off of someone's roof, and he calls the number on your business card, you will schedule a time to repair his roof on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, and your customer won't even know you keep the Sabbath.
And Sabbath keeping certainly will not prevent you from selling. In fact, you may be more likely to sell things you own if you are unemployed or underemployed because you keep the Sabbath. You will sell the things you need less to raise money to buy the things you need more.
I have been unemployed several times in my life, and those were the times I would sell things, not when I had money coming in. When I had a steady income, I accumulated stuff. When I did not have money coming in and I needed money for rent, food, and utilities, I sold less important things like video tapes, computers, TVs, cameras, etc. I sold in person or on eBay.
People in financial stress sell what they have to buy what they need. They sell their second car to buy food. They sell their house and rent a small apartment to have money for utilities.
Sabbath keeping will not stop you from taking your car to a used car dealer on Tuesday, selling it, and then taking a bus or walking to the grocery store to buy milk and bread with the money you got for your car. The used car dealer won't know you keep the Sabbath, or necessarily care, when he buys your car on a Tuesday, and the clerk at the grocery store who sells you food won't know or care either.
Besides all that, many people have money saved up or sources of income that do not require working on the Sabbath or any day for that matter. People who have saved up money in the bank, maybe tens of thousands of dollars or more, perhaps for their retirement, would be able to keep the Sabbath and still live off their savings, spending interest or principle to buy what they need. Many retired people live off their savings and do not work at all. Some people have regular retirement incomes from government programs or private pension funds that do not require them to work.
If Sunday will be the mark of the beast, there will have to be some enforcement mechanism not automatically built in to Sunday keeping, something more than inability to hold most full-time jobs because you keep the Sabbath.
But money itself could be an enforcement mechanism, not just for Sunday keeping, but for any number of violations of God's law that the beast power could impose.
There is a trend in the world to get away from paper currency and coins as a medium of exchange, to go "cashless", to use only checks and bank cards and other electronic processes as money. In the United States, the IRS would like to see that happen because it is easier to track income when all money transfers are through the banking system either by check or by credit or debit card. Transactions through the banking system, checks or bank card transactions, leave a trail of income and spending which physical cash does not.
If governments eliminate paper currency and coins as forms of cash and require all money transfers to be in the form of checks or bank debit or credit card transactions, you will not be able to buy or sell, without a bank account.
It is almost that way today, in some respects. Although paper currency and coins are still used, especially for small transactions, large transactions are usually made by bank check or by electronic transfers. Employers pay their employees by check.
If you work for an employer, you can still cash your paycheck without a bank account today in the United States. You can cash it at a currency exchange, for a fee, and sometimes you can cash it at the bank that issues the check even if you do not have an account with that bank, if you have enough identification.
But it would not take much for that to change. Even today, it is getting harder and harder to function financially, to buy and sell, without some kind of bank account. Even certain kinds of money cards you can buy in a department or grocery store, which you can load up with money at the cash register, are really bank accounts, though they do not seem to be.
If the government eliminated cash, meaning paper currency and coin, as legal tender and required all transactions to be made with bank credit or debit cards or checks, you will not be able to buy or sell without a bank account.
What is the problem with that?
The banking industry is already regulated by the government. To open a bank account, you must sign papers agreeing to the rules of the bank plus anything else the government requires banks to put into their contracts with their customers.
That is where the beast power can require that people commit themselves to a violation of God's law, in letter or in spirit, in order to have a bank account. And without a bank account, if cash is eliminated, you would not be able to buy or sell. Without a bank account, you would not be able to cash or deposit or use your paycheck - it would just be paper - even if you have a job. The beast power can require you to sign something, something in the bank agreement, something you cannot sign as a Christian, in order to have a bank account.
What might be in the agreement you would have to sign to have a bank account? It could be many things.
If Sunday is the mark of the beast, bank agreements may include a clause that you agree to recognize Sunday as God's day of rest and worship and promise not to work on that day.
But it could be other things. It could be recognition and allegiance to the beast and false prophet as God's representatives. It could be recognition of the trinity doctrine. It could be a promise to respect and uphold the worship of Mary. And it certainly could include the words, "I swear", with no provision allowed for those who want to use the words, "I affirm".
Anything false, anything that compromises with God's truth, can be included in a bank agreement required to hold an account, and it would make it impossible for faithful Christians to sign without compromising. And without a bank account, you would not be able to buy and sell, because there would be no more physical cash.
Bank accounts could be the mechanism for enforcement of the mark of the beast that would make it impossible for those who remain faithful to God to buy or sell. For without physical cash, without paper currency and coin, there will simply be no money apart from bank account funds. No bank account, no money. No bank account, no way to receive money even if you work and no way to pay money to others. No way to receive or pay money, no way to buy or sell.
Note that the mark is on the right hand or the forehead (Revelation 13:16). Men work with both hands, but most people are right handed and sign contracts with their right hand. With the mind (represented by the forehead) one chooses to compromise, and with the right hand one chooses to sign a document agreeing to compromise with God's truth.
One characteristic of Satan that can serve as a mark or sign is simply the way of life of deception - of saying something you don't mean, of signing something you know is false and you don't really believe, or signing something false even if you do believe it.
Without money, how would faithful Christians live and eat?
Such people must trust God to provide. God may provide ways for Christians to obtain enough to survive through barter. You mow your neighbor's lawn, or babysit for his children, or repair his car, in return for food, not money. That is a precarious way to live, but it will force faithful Christians to depend on God to give them favor in the eyes of their neighbors, friends, and relatives.
The key, I think, to being prepared for this, to have the courage to refuse the mark of the beast, would be to develop the habit of not lying or deceiving others or compromising with the truth in what we say we agree with, either verbally or in writing.
Let's make sure we never compromise with the truth.

Changing "Times and Law" - Calendar "Reform"
"He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, shall persecute the saints of the Most High, and shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand for a time and times and half a time" (Daniel 7:25).
This post is not about the Hebrew calendar and the issues some who claim to be part of the Church of God make about the calendar. It is about the fulfillment of prophecy about changes that may come about, made by the beast power and false prophet, to this world's calendar.
There may come a time, at the end of this age before the return of Christ, when this world's calendar will be changed in a way that will make it more difficult for God's people to keep the weekly Sabbath.
Many years ago, more than forty I think, I read an article from a group advocating reform of this world's calendar (this group had nothing to do with the Church of God or any religion as far as I know).
They proposed a scheme that would simplify the way weeks would fall in the months and in the quarters.
As I remember it, with their calendar, every month would have exactly four or five weeks, and every quarter of the year would have exactly 13 weeks. Two of the months of each quarter would be exactly four weeks and one month of each quarter would be exactly five weeks. So, for example, the first quarter of the year could have January with exactly four weeks (giving January 28 days), February with exactly four weeks (giving February 28 days), and March with exactly 5 weeks (giving March 35 days), total = 13 weeks for the first quarter of the year, and so on for the other quarters.
Every month would start with the beginning of a week so the first day of a month or of a quarter or of a year will always be the first day of a week.
Any particular yearly date, such as July 4, would always fall on the same day of the week every year.
The way they presented it, their calendar would vastly simplify business and accounting practices just by making the weeks fit evenly into the months.
From the world's point of view, this might be very logical.
There is one problem with what I have described so far, and they propose one more change that would solve that problem.
The number of days in the year is usually 365. Divide that number of days by seven to get the number of weeks in a year, and you get 52 weeks plus one day left over. 52 times 7 equals 364. You need one more day to make 365. If you went with a 364 day year, the seasons would change so that in about 180 years the seasons would be reversed - you would have snow in July and heat in January. So you need an extra day to keep the years accurate.
So what will they do with that extra day? They want to call it a "World Day", which would not be counted as a day in the week.
Once a year, twice during leap years, there would be a "World Day", a holiday, not counted by the world as a day of the week.
For perhaps the first time, the weekly cycle the world observes would be broken.
The World Day would come after the last day of a week and before the first day of the next week.

But this world will still call Sunday the first day of the week and Saturday the seventh day of the week. Which day would be the real seventh day, God's Sabbath day? FRIDAY!
So for the following year, what this world would call "Friday" would be the real seventh day of the week, God's Sabbath from sunset Thursday to sunset Friday.
So if you are working for a year, you will have to tell your boss, "I can't work Friday". Then, at the end of the year, another World Day would come, not counted by mankind as a day of the week (but counted by God as a day of the week), and the days would get shifted again, so you would have to tell your boss, "This year I can't work on Thursdays". Then the next year, "This year I can't work on Wednesdays".
In leap years, there would be two World Days, probably six months apart.
Would that not make Sabbath keeping more difficult?
I do not know if this is what Bible prophecy is referring to when it speaks of a horn intending to change times and law (Daniel 7:24-25). But I think it is a possibility.
Probably there are many ideas for calendar change floating around. What I have described may be just one example.
But from the world's point of view, any major calendar reform makes no sense if it leaves each month with an uneven number of weeks and if the first day of a month (or accounting quarter or year) is not also the first day of a week - otherwise, why change what we have? But any change to even out the number of weeks in each month would have to involve breaking the weekly cycle which has been unbroken since creation.
It would amount to the same thing even if the details of a future calendar are different from what I have described. To even out the weeks with the months, quarters, and years, you have to break the weekly cycle. And the day of the week, as mankind names the days of the week, that is truly the Sabbath in God's eyes would vary from year to year.
The movement of the earth around the sun and the rotation of the earth on its axis make it impossible to keep the weekly cycle unbroken yet make each year an exact number of weeks.
And the beast and false prophet can say to the Church of God, "Sure, you can have your Saturday Sabbath. But you have to accept this new calendar. We define when the week begins and ends."
This may be one way that the powers and authorities of this world, led by Satan, will make Sabbath keeping more difficult for God's people in the future when the beast power dominates the world.
This post is not about the Hebrew calendar and the issues some who claim to be part of the Church of God make about the calendar. It is about the fulfillment of prophecy about changes that may come about, made by the beast power and false prophet, to this world's calendar.
There may come a time, at the end of this age before the return of Christ, when this world's calendar will be changed in a way that will make it more difficult for God's people to keep the weekly Sabbath.
Many years ago, more than forty I think, I read an article from a group advocating reform of this world's calendar (this group had nothing to do with the Church of God or any religion as far as I know).
They proposed a scheme that would simplify the way weeks would fall in the months and in the quarters.
As I remember it, with their calendar, every month would have exactly four or five weeks, and every quarter of the year would have exactly 13 weeks. Two of the months of each quarter would be exactly four weeks and one month of each quarter would be exactly five weeks. So, for example, the first quarter of the year could have January with exactly four weeks (giving January 28 days), February with exactly four weeks (giving February 28 days), and March with exactly 5 weeks (giving March 35 days), total = 13 weeks for the first quarter of the year, and so on for the other quarters.
Every month would start with the beginning of a week so the first day of a month or of a quarter or of a year will always be the first day of a week.
Any particular yearly date, such as July 4, would always fall on the same day of the week every year.
The way they presented it, their calendar would vastly simplify business and accounting practices just by making the weeks fit evenly into the months.
From the world's point of view, this might be very logical.
There is one problem with what I have described so far, and they propose one more change that would solve that problem.
The number of days in the year is usually 365. Divide that number of days by seven to get the number of weeks in a year, and you get 52 weeks plus one day left over. 52 times 7 equals 364. You need one more day to make 365. If you went with a 364 day year, the seasons would change so that in about 180 years the seasons would be reversed - you would have snow in July and heat in January. So you need an extra day to keep the years accurate.
So what will they do with that extra day? They want to call it a "World Day", which would not be counted as a day in the week.
Once a year, twice during leap years, there would be a "World Day", a holiday, not counted by the world as a day of the week.
For perhaps the first time, the weekly cycle the world observes would be broken.
The World Day would come after the last day of a week and before the first day of the next week.

Should We Attend Thanksgiving Dinner with our Unconverted Families?
Should we attend Thanksgiving dinner with our unconverted families and friends?
This is a question I have meditated on recently.
In the past, I have always been willing to attend Thanksgiving dinner with my unconverted family. But this year I probably will not. And for those who face similar choices, I will share my thoughts on the subject, for what they are worth.
There is certainly nothing wrong with observing Thanksgiving dinner with members of the Church of God and families in the Church. Thanksgiving does not originate in paganism, but is a tradition started by early Americans to give thanks to their Creator for His blessings and protection. There are no pagan symbols or rituals involved, and the giving of thanks is based on godly principles. There is no prohibition in the Bible in principle or in the letter of the law against having a dinner to observe the giving of thanks to God for His blessings, gifts, and protection, nor is there any prohibition against making it a tradition of the nation.
I also believe there is nothing wrong with having Thanksgiving dinner with unconverted family or friends who do not know the truth, because God has not called them at this time, yet believe in a Creator God and desire to honor Him and give Him thanks on this day. They are not called in this age. They do not know the full truth of the gospel. God has not opened their minds to really understand the truth of God's nature. They may think of God as a trinity. They may keep Christmas, Easter, and Sunday. They may follow and believe and practice the traditions of their church more than God's word.
But they know that God exists. They feel gratitude to God who created them and this universe and desire to give thanks to Him.
And I think there is nothing wrong with joining such people in giving thanks to God at Thanksgiving dinner. When they sometime learn the truth about God in the millennium or white throne judgment, their thankfulness will transfer to their knowledge of the true God, and their heart-felt gratitude will increase. The habit of mind of being grateful to God - the attitude of thanksgiving and appreciation - the attitude they express in this age by observing Thanksgiving - is not something they will have to unlearn. Those who are sincerely thankful to God in this life will have a head start over those who are not thankful, when they live into the millennium or are raised in the white throne judgment, even if their knowledge of God is a mixture of truth and error today. That is because thankfulness is an attitude of mind, an approach, a way of thinking, and it is based on love. Being thankful is a part of character, not just knowledge.
The principle is the same with other points and principles of God's law. Catholics and Protestants are right when they are faithful to their spouses, when they are honest in their dealings with others, when they forgive others, when they do good for others and give to the poor. Those who are not called in this age do not have the full truth of God. But when they obey some of the points of God's law in this life, they will have a head start on learning God's way of life in the millennium or white throne judgment period.
I personally have no problem eating Thanksgiving dinner with people like that who are sincerely trying to give thanks to God the best they know how.
But what about those who have no real desire to thank God but only use the day of Thanksgiving to eat a big meal, socialize with friends and family, and have a good time playing games or watching TV? Should I eat Thanksgiving dinner with those people? I don't think I should. That is just my opinion. Each person must form his or her own judgment, based on the principles God teaches us in the Bible, applying those principles to the circumstances we find ourselves in.
Fundamentally, to celebrate and have a good time but without a desire to thank God, then call it "Thanksgiving" and make use of a tradition started by Americans who were sincerely grateful to God for preserving their lives and blessing them, is plain hypocrisy, and I want no fellowship with hypocrisy.
At one Thanksgiving dinner I observed, there was an atheist in the group. The hostess asked that we go around the table and each person state what he or she is thankful for, but to accommodate the atheist she said something like, "Say what you are thankful for, not necessarily to God, but just thankful for in general".
But what does that mean? How can you be thankful for something without an object for your thankfulness, someone you want to give thanks to? "I give thanks to the random universe for making me by evolution"? That makes no sense. And I do not want to be part of that kind of thing though I may have in the past. Not this year. I am trying to learn my lessons from my past mistakes. If I had already made a commitment to accept a Thanksgiving dinner invitation, I would keep my commitment, but in the future I do not intend to accept an invitation if I know those at the dinner will not be keeping the day in a right spirit.
Some of you may be faced with similar choices. I am not trying to tell you what you should do. I am simply sharing my opinion and thoughts about this in the spirit of "iron sharpens iron" and in the hope it may cause others to think and meditate on the principles of God's way of life on this point. Each person must make his own judgment based on the principles of the Bible.
And certainly there can be additional factors involved in accepting or declining an invitation to Thanksgiving dinner or in inviting individuals to your home for Thanksgiving if you are the host.
As always, we should pray about important or difficult decisions and ask God to guide us by His word, the Bible, and by His Holy Spirit.

We Are Being Prepared for God's Kingdom
The Feast of Tabernacles is one of the festivals ordained by God in the Old Testament. Like all the festivals and holy days, it helps to illustrate God's plan for the salvation of mankind (Leviticus 23:1-44).
Passover illustrates the sacrifice of Jesus Christ to pay the penalty of our sins so we can be forgiven and saved (Exodus 12:21-23, John 1:29, Revelation 5:1-14, 12:11, 13:8, Isaiah 53:1-12). The Days of Unleavened Bread illustrate our part and responsibility in repenting and putting sins out of our lives (Leviticus 23:6, 1 Corinthians 5:6-8).
Pentecost represents the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us understand God's truth and to help us overcome our sins. It also represents the start of the New Testament Church of God (because the Church is defined as the collective body of those having God's Holy Spirit dwelling within them - see Romans 8:9-11), and the start of the preaching of the gospel to the world by the Church (Leviticus 23:15-21, Acts 2:1-41).
The Day of Trumpets teaches us about end time events when God begins to intervene in this world in a direct and powerful way to bring the 6,000 year age of man to a close. That intervention begins and ends with the Day of the Lord and includes the return of Jesus Christ to rule the earth and the resurrection or change to immortality of all the members of the Church who have overcome and endured to the end (Leviticus 23:23-25, Revelation 6:12-14, 8:6-21, 11:15-19, Isaiah 13:6-12, Joel 1:15, 2:1-2, 31, 1 Corinthians 15:50-56, 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18).
The Day of Atonement teaches us about the putting away of Satan after the return of Christ so he can no longer deceive and tempt the world to sin, and it reminds us of the sacrifice of Christ for our sins and our responsibility, each of us, to reject Satan and his way and put him and his sinful ways out of our lives (Leviticus 23:26-32, 16:1-33, Revelation 20:1-3).
The Feast of Tabernacles represents the one thousand year reign of Christ with the resurrected saints, now immortal, over the earth (Leviticus 23:33-43, Revelation 20:4-6).
After the seven days of the Feast of Tabernacles comes the "eighth day" or "the last day" and "that great day of the Feast" (Leviticus 23:39, John 7:37-38), which we call "the Last Great Day". That represents the general resurrection of the dead, the white throne judgment period, when all the billions of people who have lived and died without a chance for salvation will be resurrected and given an opportunity, their first, to choose to accept God's way of life and be saved (Revelation 20:11-15, Ezekiel 37:1-14).
The Feast of Tabernacles and the Last Great Day run together, in one sense separate festivals because they have slightly different meanings, but in one sense the same because the Last Great Day is called the "eighth day" and the "last day" or "great day" of the Feast and because Christ's reign over the earth with the saints continues through the white throne judgment, so there is a continuity.
The weekly Sabbath day also represents part of God's plan. As the seventh day Sabbath rest follows six days of the workweek, so the one thousand year reign of Christ with the saints will follow six thousand years of man ruling himself apart from God and under Satan's influence. As the weekly Sabbath is intended to be a day of rest and a day of delight, so the rule of Christ over the earth will bring peace and happiness to mankind (Exodus 20:8-11, 2 Peter 3:8).
The weekly Sabbath represents the millennium as the Feast of Tabernacles represents the millennium.
The Feast of Tabernacles also reminds us, as we live in temporary dwellings for the eight days, that this life and world (society) is temporary - we are "sojourners", strangers, in this world under Satan's influence. Our real citizenship is in heaven, not this world (Philippians 3:20-21).
The seven thousand year plan of God is intended to teach the human race through experience that God's way of life is better than Satan's way. Mankind will be able to compare the fruits of Satan's way of life for six thousand years, a way that has produced misery and destruction, with the fruits of God's way of life for one thousand years, a way that will produce peace and happiness. Mankind, those living in the millennium and those who come up in the white throne judgment, will be able to compare and choose the way of life they will commit to. Those who choose God's way of life will be given eternal life in the Kingdom of God. Those who do not choose God's way of life will be destroyed forever.
I have heard a number of members in the Church of God relate that when they were first learning the truth and coming into the Church of God, when they first learned the meaning of the holy days and the plan of God that the holy days illustrate, they were awestruck with the logic and clarity of it and the wonderful truth it represents.
God's plan, as illustrated by the annual holy days and feast and the weekly Sabbath, is very logical. It is the only explanation for the world and our human experience that really makes sense. Yet, the majority of humanity rejects knowledge of God's plan. They do this because they are deceived by Satan and this is not their time to be called.
This world cannot understand God's plan because they are not willing to believe and obey God's word. They do not observe and practice God's holy days, therefore God will not open their understanding. For it is only those who actually observe God's annual holy days and festivals as God instructs, as well as the weekly Sabbath, who are able to understand God's plan illustrated by those days. Just studying the meaning of the days without observing them is not sufficient (Psalm 111:10).
Jesus Christ and God the Father are working in and through the Church of God today to prepare us to serve God in the millennium and white throne judgment by reigning with Christ over the earth, turning mankind towards God. But they are also working through the Church of God to preach the gospel to the world and the Ezekiel warning to Israel, to prepare them for the tribulation, the Day of the Lord, and the millennium that follows.
Our job now is twofold: One, build character to prepare us to reign with Christ. We do this by making right choices to resist and reject sin and choose the righteousness of Christ and God the Father, until choosing the right and rejecting the wrong becomes our habit and way of life. Two, preach the gospel and the Ezekiel warning to the only generation of mankind that will live in two worlds, two ages, this present generation that will live into the millennium. We have a vital role to prepare the world for what is to come.
But in preaching the gospel, we are also building right character, so our second job, to preach the gospel, actually reinforces our first job, to build character.
The Feast of Tabernacles and the Last Great Day also picture the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God will consist of Jesus Christ and the resurrected saints, the family of God, which will rule over the earth during the millennium.
Besides what they picture and represent, the Feast of Tabernacles and the Last Great Day provide Church of God members with a period of time for spiritual renewal, more than a week of sermons, fellowship, and the opportunity for prayer, Bible study, and serving others - a period of intensified instruction. This gives us the opportunity to have our spiritual batteries recharged, in a sense, and the lessons we learn during the Feast can be reviewed and studied throughout the coming year.
The Feast represents God's kingdom, and the keeping of the Feast is part of our preparation and training for that kingdom.

Passover illustrates the sacrifice of Jesus Christ to pay the penalty of our sins so we can be forgiven and saved (Exodus 12:21-23, John 1:29, Revelation 5:1-14, 12:11, 13:8, Isaiah 53:1-12). The Days of Unleavened Bread illustrate our part and responsibility in repenting and putting sins out of our lives (Leviticus 23:6, 1 Corinthians 5:6-8).
Pentecost represents the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us understand God's truth and to help us overcome our sins. It also represents the start of the New Testament Church of God (because the Church is defined as the collective body of those having God's Holy Spirit dwelling within them - see Romans 8:9-11), and the start of the preaching of the gospel to the world by the Church (Leviticus 23:15-21, Acts 2:1-41).
The Day of Trumpets teaches us about end time events when God begins to intervene in this world in a direct and powerful way to bring the 6,000 year age of man to a close. That intervention begins and ends with the Day of the Lord and includes the return of Jesus Christ to rule the earth and the resurrection or change to immortality of all the members of the Church who have overcome and endured to the end (Leviticus 23:23-25, Revelation 6:12-14, 8:6-21, 11:15-19, Isaiah 13:6-12, Joel 1:15, 2:1-2, 31, 1 Corinthians 15:50-56, 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18).
The Day of Atonement teaches us about the putting away of Satan after the return of Christ so he can no longer deceive and tempt the world to sin, and it reminds us of the sacrifice of Christ for our sins and our responsibility, each of us, to reject Satan and his way and put him and his sinful ways out of our lives (Leviticus 23:26-32, 16:1-33, Revelation 20:1-3).
The Feast of Tabernacles represents the one thousand year reign of Christ with the resurrected saints, now immortal, over the earth (Leviticus 23:33-43, Revelation 20:4-6).
After the seven days of the Feast of Tabernacles comes the "eighth day" or "the last day" and "that great day of the Feast" (Leviticus 23:39, John 7:37-38), which we call "the Last Great Day". That represents the general resurrection of the dead, the white throne judgment period, when all the billions of people who have lived and died without a chance for salvation will be resurrected and given an opportunity, their first, to choose to accept God's way of life and be saved (Revelation 20:11-15, Ezekiel 37:1-14).
The Feast of Tabernacles and the Last Great Day run together, in one sense separate festivals because they have slightly different meanings, but in one sense the same because the Last Great Day is called the "eighth day" and the "last day" or "great day" of the Feast and because Christ's reign over the earth with the saints continues through the white throne judgment, so there is a continuity.
The weekly Sabbath day also represents part of God's plan. As the seventh day Sabbath rest follows six days of the workweek, so the one thousand year reign of Christ with the saints will follow six thousand years of man ruling himself apart from God and under Satan's influence. As the weekly Sabbath is intended to be a day of rest and a day of delight, so the rule of Christ over the earth will bring peace and happiness to mankind (Exodus 20:8-11, 2 Peter 3:8).
The weekly Sabbath represents the millennium as the Feast of Tabernacles represents the millennium.
The Feast of Tabernacles also reminds us, as we live in temporary dwellings for the eight days, that this life and world (society) is temporary - we are "sojourners", strangers, in this world under Satan's influence. Our real citizenship is in heaven, not this world (Philippians 3:20-21).
The seven thousand year plan of God is intended to teach the human race through experience that God's way of life is better than Satan's way. Mankind will be able to compare the fruits of Satan's way of life for six thousand years, a way that has produced misery and destruction, with the fruits of God's way of life for one thousand years, a way that will produce peace and happiness. Mankind, those living in the millennium and those who come up in the white throne judgment, will be able to compare and choose the way of life they will commit to. Those who choose God's way of life will be given eternal life in the Kingdom of God. Those who do not choose God's way of life will be destroyed forever.
I have heard a number of members in the Church of God relate that when they were first learning the truth and coming into the Church of God, when they first learned the meaning of the holy days and the plan of God that the holy days illustrate, they were awestruck with the logic and clarity of it and the wonderful truth it represents.
God's plan, as illustrated by the annual holy days and feast and the weekly Sabbath, is very logical. It is the only explanation for the world and our human experience that really makes sense. Yet, the majority of humanity rejects knowledge of God's plan. They do this because they are deceived by Satan and this is not their time to be called.
This world cannot understand God's plan because they are not willing to believe and obey God's word. They do not observe and practice God's holy days, therefore God will not open their understanding. For it is only those who actually observe God's annual holy days and festivals as God instructs, as well as the weekly Sabbath, who are able to understand God's plan illustrated by those days. Just studying the meaning of the days without observing them is not sufficient (Psalm 111:10).
Jesus Christ and God the Father are working in and through the Church of God today to prepare us to serve God in the millennium and white throne judgment by reigning with Christ over the earth, turning mankind towards God. But they are also working through the Church of God to preach the gospel to the world and the Ezekiel warning to Israel, to prepare them for the tribulation, the Day of the Lord, and the millennium that follows.
Our job now is twofold: One, build character to prepare us to reign with Christ. We do this by making right choices to resist and reject sin and choose the righteousness of Christ and God the Father, until choosing the right and rejecting the wrong becomes our habit and way of life. Two, preach the gospel and the Ezekiel warning to the only generation of mankind that will live in two worlds, two ages, this present generation that will live into the millennium. We have a vital role to prepare the world for what is to come.
But in preaching the gospel, we are also building right character, so our second job, to preach the gospel, actually reinforces our first job, to build character.
The Feast of Tabernacles and the Last Great Day also picture the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God will consist of Jesus Christ and the resurrected saints, the family of God, which will rule over the earth during the millennium.
Besides what they picture and represent, the Feast of Tabernacles and the Last Great Day provide Church of God members with a period of time for spiritual renewal, more than a week of sermons, fellowship, and the opportunity for prayer, Bible study, and serving others - a period of intensified instruction. This gives us the opportunity to have our spiritual batteries recharged, in a sense, and the lessons we learn during the Feast can be reviewed and studied throughout the coming year.
The Feast represents God's kingdom, and the keeping of the Feast is part of our preparation and training for that kingdom.

A Pure Language
God will give mankind a pure language in the millennium. "For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, that they all may call on the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one accord" (Zephaniah 3:9).
Why will it be necessary for humanity to be given a pure language? What is wrong with the languages we have today?
For one thing, the world today is divided by a multitude of languages. It was not that way in the beginning. At one time, the whole world was of one language.
"Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. Then they said to one another, 'Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.' They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. And they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.' But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. And the Lord said, 'Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.' So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth" (Genesis 11:1-9).
God confused the language of man at that time to divide mankind. This was for the purpose of limiting what man would do. Mankind, under Satan's influence, has always been headed in the wrong direction since the sin of Adam. God did not change mankind's direction, but He slowed the human race down by putting the breaks on what mankind could accomplish. By confusing the language of man, He caused human society to be divided, no longer able to act as one unified world.
But when Christ is ruling the earth, that division will no longer be necessary. Christ will lead mankind in the right direction, so He will no longer need to have the world divided by a multitude of languages to limit and slow down the pace of what man does.
The world will be a simpler place when all people speak the same language.
But also, the language God will give mankind will be pure in a way that no language today is pure.
Today, probably all commonly spoken human languages are corrupt because our languages reflect the corruption of our carnal thinking.
Languages change over time. We invent new words and lose some old ones through disuse. Words change in meaning as we use them in new ways. Common usage gives words their meaning, and language changes as our use of language changes.
And languages reflect the thinking, biases, values, and culture of the people who use them.
Since mankind is corrupt in his thinking, his languages are corrupt also.
Take for example the word, "normal". What does it mean? Does it mean, "right and good", "satisfactory", "ok"? Or does it mean, "average"? Depending on the context, it can mean either one. It can mean "right" or it can mean "average" because people can use it either way when they speak.
Sometimes a person will use the word to mean, "right", "good", "satisfactory" when he says, "that is normal". But sometimes a person will use the word to mean, "average". He will say, "that is normal" to mean, that is average, typical, the way things usually are.
But a problem is that these two meanings can be blurred in our minds, and the word can be used, intentionally or not, to blur the distinction between "average", and "right" or "ok". The problem is, what is average or typical is NOT right and ok. But the idea, that average is ok, is built into the word "normal" because of the way people use the word.
And that happens because of the way most people think. Most people think of society as the arbitrator of, the authority that defines, right and wrong, good and bad. In the minds of most people, "bad" is what the majority of society says is bad, and "good" is what the majority says is good. Society becomes the ultimate authority of morality for these people.
And who leads society? Satan.
Thus, a word like "normal" can mean both "average" and "ok" or "good".
Most people define "ok" or "good" according to the behavior and thinking of the majority of society. "Everybody does it", someone will say to justify some behavior. They think if everyone does it (whatever "it" is), it must be ok.
Of course, it really isn't everyone who does it - just the majority.
Then, with just that one word, "normal", a person can use the very meaning of our language to justify wrong behavior.
For example, in a supermarket you might see a mother telling her child to do something, or stop doing something, and the child is disobeying. Or maybe the child is throwing a temper tantrum in the store because the mother won't buy the child what the child wants, and the mother let's the child get away with it. Discuss the situation with some people outside the Church, and they might say of the child's (and mother's) behavior, "that is normal". But what does that mean?
Does the person mean, "that is average or typical of a mother and her child"? In that case, yes, it may be "normal" in the sense that it may be typical of the majority in our society today. Or does the person mean, "that is ok, nothing wrong with it"? In that case, no, it is not "normal" in the sense that it is ok.
What the person really means is, "that's the way kids are, so it is ok". But it is not ok. Properly trained and disciplined in a godly family, children will be obedient. But in our society, that truly is the way most kids are to one degree or another.
There is a false concept, that moral values are only relative to what the majority of society accepts, that is built-in to the world "normal" because of the way "normal" is commonly used in this world's discussions and conversations.
So wrong concepts, wrong ideas, wrong standards, values, and beliefs are built in to our very languages, whether we are aware of that or not. And our languages influence our thinking just as our thinking influences our languages.
That is why God will have to replace man's languages by giving us one pure language, as He cleans up mankind's thinking, beliefs, and behavior.

Israel Will Be the Model Nation in the Millennium
God from the beginning intended Israel to be a model nation, a positive example for the rest of the world to follow of a nation that obeys God and practices God's way of life. "Therefore be careful to observe them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes, and say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.' For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the Lord our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him? And what great nation is there that has such statutes and righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set before you this day?" (Deuteronomy 4:6-8).
For the most part, Israel has not fulfilled that role. But they will in the millennium.
God will work first with Israel. He will rescue them and save them from the tribulation and will gather those who survive into the land of Israel.
As God teaches and rules Israel, other nations will see Israel's example and prosperity and will see the advantage of coming under God's rule voluntarily. Those nations that refuse to obey God will suffer punishments. "And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, on them there will be no rain. If the family of Egypt will not come up and enter in, they shall have no rain; they shall receive the plague with which the Lord strikes the nations who do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. This shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles" (Zechariah 14:16-19).
Those nations that obey God will be blessed. (By the way, since nations will be required to send representatives to Jerusalem for the Feast, that suggests to me that there will be airplane travel, for how else would it be practical for leaders of nations all over the world to go to Jerusalem for the Feast? - something to think about.)
Israel will be the first nation to receive blessings for obedience, and God's way of life will spread all over the earth as other nations see the benefits of obeying God and receiving the blessings of obedience. They will see Israel's blessings and will want the same blessings themselves. The leaders and representatives of all nations will come to Jerusalem (in some cases after learning their lessons when they receive no rain - Zechariah 14:16-19), and will experience and see and hear firsthand what God's way of life is like. They will hear God's law and word taught at the Feast. They will see the prosperity and example of God's people. And they can take the lessons they learn back to their own lands and say to their people, "Let us obey the God of Israel, for I have seen that Israel is exceedingly blessed."
In this way, God's way of life and knowledge of the true God can spread over the earth.
I don't know for sure it will happen exactly this way. I am not sure to what extent Christ will simply rule other nations by force or motivate them to submit voluntarily through a combination of rewards and punishments, blessings for nations that come under God's rule and curses for nations that refuse to obey for a time, till they repent (Zechariah 14:16-19).
But Israel will be a model nation in any case.
Yet every one of us has a direct responsibility right now, in helping to bring about the transformation of Israel into a model of God's way of life, whether we realize it or not. Your Feast offerings have a direct bearing on this.
That first generation of Israel is very important, and most of that generation is alive today. Our responsibility is to prepare that generation for the tribulation, now.
We do that by preaching the gospel and the Ezekiel warning to them, now.
Why is that important?
Why is it important for Israel to hear the true gospel and the Ezekiel warning, now, before the tribulation begins, in order for them to be a model nation at the beginning of the millennium?
Israel must have a good attitude in order to truly repent and obey God on a consistent basis. Israel must be humble and teachable. Israel must also trust God and believe in God's goodness and fairness.
Now, put yourself in the position of a typical religious American, Canadian, or Briton. You might be Catholic or Protestant. You are sincere. You believe in God. You are active in your church, and you are serious and zealous about serving God, but not according to knowledge, like many of the Jews of Paul's day. You worship God, but not in truth because you are deceived.
You have some knowledge of God's law, but it is limited and incomplete. Yet, to the degree you know God's law and will, you obey it. You know that adultery is wrong, so you are faithful to your spouse. You know that it is wrong to lust, so you do not look at other women to desire them. You never steal, never cheat on your income tax. You honor your parents. You never use filthy language or take God's name in vain. You do good deeds for others, serve widows, and give to the poor. You forgive others and do not hold grudges because you know that Christ commands forgiveness.
Yet, you believe and practice the traditions of your Catholic or Protestant church more than the Bible. You pray to a "trinity" god. You work on the Sabbath and observe Sunday as "the Lord's Day". You observe Christmas and Easter and think you are worshipping God by doing so. And you may be setting up idols, images of Christ, images of Mary, as an "aid" to worshipping God.
Why? Because you are deceived and you don't believe what God says in the Bible. You have been taught that the Bible needs to be interpreted by your church, and you have been taught that God guides your church to interpret the Bible correctly. So you let them twist the meaning of plain scriptures to justify your traditions.
But you think you are pleasing God in your life. You may pray quietly in your mind, many times during the day as you go about your business. You feel close to God. You teach your children about God and rejoice when they believe as you have taught them because you think you are doing a good thing for your children to bring them into a close relationship with God.
You are sure God is pleased with your life. But God is not pleased. You think you know God but you don't know Him.
Is this fiction I am describing? Is there anyone like this in our countries?
There are probably millions like this. I was raised Catholic. My family is Catholic. I think I know what I am talking about.
So how do you think these people will react in the tribulation, when they finally learn that God is punishing them for the way they have tried to worship Him, if they never have a chance to hear the truth while they have time to repent before the punishment? If God never even gives them a warning that what they are doing is wrong before their punishment comes, what will they think about God? Will they trust in God's goodness after that? Not likely! Not easily.
Will they not say to themselves, "God isn't fair. He never gave me a chance. If He had only warned me, I would have repented."
But in fact, God has provided a warning, through us, His servants, IF we deliver it. "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: When I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand" (Ezekiel 3:17-18). "Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter" (Proverbs 24:11). "Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets" (Matthew 7:12). "And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets" (Matthew 22:39-40). "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come" (Matthew 24:13).
God commands we deliver the warning message and the true gospel of the Kingdom of God. But He has not made it easy for us. We can do the job, but only if we sacrifice. We need to go all out.
If we are faithful to do the job God has given us, Israel will be warned, and when they go through the tribulation, they will remember that God was fair to give them a warning first. They will be able to take responsibility for their decision to ignore the warning. Acknowledging their own fault in ignoring the warning message will be a necessary step towards repentance. But for that to happen, they must hear the warning, and we must give them the warning.
Then, they will acknowledge that God was fair towards them in having the Church give them a warning before their punishment. They will be able to trust God, knowing that God was fair.
That is what will make Israel humble and teachable in the millennium so they can be converted and become the model nation to set the example for all nations on the earth.
We need to go all out to preach the good news, the true gospel of the Kingdom of God, and the Ezekiel warning of the coming punishment of the great tribulation and the Day of the Lord upon Israel if Israel does not repent of following their traditions and begin to believe the Bible and obey God.
When you hear a sermon during the Feast about Israel setting an example during the millennium for other nations to follow, know that your holy day offerings for the preaching of the gospel will help bring this to pass. That is our job now. It is our responsibility. Let's do it with zeal and with sacrifice.

For the most part, Israel has not fulfilled that role. But they will in the millennium.
God will work first with Israel. He will rescue them and save them from the tribulation and will gather those who survive into the land of Israel.
As God teaches and rules Israel, other nations will see Israel's example and prosperity and will see the advantage of coming under God's rule voluntarily. Those nations that refuse to obey God will suffer punishments. "And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, on them there will be no rain. If the family of Egypt will not come up and enter in, they shall have no rain; they shall receive the plague with which the Lord strikes the nations who do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. This shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles" (Zechariah 14:16-19).
Those nations that obey God will be blessed. (By the way, since nations will be required to send representatives to Jerusalem for the Feast, that suggests to me that there will be airplane travel, for how else would it be practical for leaders of nations all over the world to go to Jerusalem for the Feast? - something to think about.)
Israel will be the first nation to receive blessings for obedience, and God's way of life will spread all over the earth as other nations see the benefits of obeying God and receiving the blessings of obedience. They will see Israel's blessings and will want the same blessings themselves. The leaders and representatives of all nations will come to Jerusalem (in some cases after learning their lessons when they receive no rain - Zechariah 14:16-19), and will experience and see and hear firsthand what God's way of life is like. They will hear God's law and word taught at the Feast. They will see the prosperity and example of God's people. And they can take the lessons they learn back to their own lands and say to their people, "Let us obey the God of Israel, for I have seen that Israel is exceedingly blessed."
In this way, God's way of life and knowledge of the true God can spread over the earth.
I don't know for sure it will happen exactly this way. I am not sure to what extent Christ will simply rule other nations by force or motivate them to submit voluntarily through a combination of rewards and punishments, blessings for nations that come under God's rule and curses for nations that refuse to obey for a time, till they repent (Zechariah 14:16-19).
But Israel will be a model nation in any case.
Yet every one of us has a direct responsibility right now, in helping to bring about the transformation of Israel into a model of God's way of life, whether we realize it or not. Your Feast offerings have a direct bearing on this.
That first generation of Israel is very important, and most of that generation is alive today. Our responsibility is to prepare that generation for the tribulation, now.
We do that by preaching the gospel and the Ezekiel warning to them, now.
Why is that important?
Why is it important for Israel to hear the true gospel and the Ezekiel warning, now, before the tribulation begins, in order for them to be a model nation at the beginning of the millennium?
Israel must have a good attitude in order to truly repent and obey God on a consistent basis. Israel must be humble and teachable. Israel must also trust God and believe in God's goodness and fairness.

Clean and Unclean Meats
A long, well-established doctrine in the Church of God is the teaching that we should avoid eating animals God says in the Old Testament are unclean and we should not eat.
This doctrine is not controversial in the Church of God, though most mainstream, traditional churches do not observe this doctrine. But we have observed it even before Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong came on the scene. Church of God Seventh Day was observing the distinction between clean and unclean foods when Mr. Armstrong came among them almost a century ago.
God commanded that we avoid eating pork, seafood not having fins and scales, and other unclean meats. When you put all scriptures on this subject in the Bible together, it is clear that the prohibition against unclean meats is still in force today (see for example, Acts 10:9-28).
But God has not said in the Bible, why we are to avoid unclean meats. We do it because God said it, even without knowing definitely why.
It may be a matter of health. God made the human body and He also made plants and animals to provide food for our bodies. It may be that He did not design the flesh of unclean animals to be food for man and there is something harmful to our health in unclean meat. Although food scientists may or may not see problems in eating pork, God knows far more than man about the human body in all its complexity and about the real causes of disease. It may be that there are things in unclean meats that are harmful to our health that God knows about but that food scientists and doctors do not know about.
Mr. Armstrong believed that God's laws about clean and unclean meats were a matter of health, as he indicated in his autobiography.
Yet, there may be more to it than that.
God may have several reasons for giving us His law of clean and unclean meats. It may be more than just a matter of health.
For one thing, there is a spiritual lesson in avoiding unclean meats.
God sometimes uses physical practices to teach spiritual lessons. What we physically practice reminds us of spiritual lessons and principles. What we do affects how we think.
God has given us physical baptism to teach us spiritual lessons (Romans 6:3-4, Colossians 2:11-12). Baptism reminds us, for example, that we are to bury the old self and rise in newness of life. It reminds us of the burial and resurrection of Christ. Passover symbols remind us of the sacrifice of Christ.
Avoiding leavening during the Days of Unleavened Bread reminds us to put sin out of our lives. Eating unleavened bread during those days reminds us of the spiritual lesson of putting the righteousness of Christ into our lives every day.
Avoiding unclean meats may also be a physical action that teaches us a spiritual lesson. The spiritual lesson may be simply to always be alert to avoid sin.
When you eat in a restaurant during the Feast of Tabernacles, you often have to be alert to what various dishes contain. Sometimes you have to ask the waitress if a certain dish, maybe soup for example, contains pork. We have to be alert to choose the good and avoid the bad.
I am writing this post in a restaurant after having a meal of pancakes and eggs for breakfast. The menu said this dish includes bacon or sausage. So I had them substitute a hamburger patty for the bacon or sausage.
The spiritual lesson is a reminder to resist temptation to sin, to make a distinction, based on the word of God, between what God approves and what He forbids. We are to live by every word of God, rejecting the wrong and doing the right.
Just as I rejected bacon or sausage for breakfast and substituted beef, based on God's word, so I must reject sin and do what is right in God's sight, based on God's word. When a thought comes into my mind, I must reject it or accept it, based on the Bible, just as I reject unclean meats and accept clean meats based on the Bible.
So if wrong thoughts come into my mind, thoughts of hate, or lust, or vanity, I should put those thoughts out of my mind, based on God's word, just as I told the waiter not to bring bacon or sausage with my pancakes and eggs. But if right thoughts comes into my mind, such as giving God thanks or using an opportunity to serve others, I can accept those thoughts, just as I accepted the pancakes, eggs, and hamburger patty (Colossians 3:1-2, Philippians 4:8-9, 2 Corinthians 10:4-5).
Being alert to what I eat, avoiding unclean meats based on what the Bible says, is a reinforcement of the habit of being alert to what I am thinking, saying, and doing based on the Bible, rejecting sinful thoughts, words, and actions just as I avoid ham, bacon, or shrimp when I eat.
It is the same kind of lesson and reminder of avoiding sin that we learn by avoiding leavening during the Days of Unleavened Bread, but the lesson of unclean meats goes on all year.
There may be another spiritual lesson to be learned from clean and unclean meats, and that is the lesson of faith.
Mankind and the world of science do not necessarily say there is anything unhealthy about pork. Yet God tells us to avoid eating pork and other unclean meats without telling us the reason why. When we obey God in this, we are demonstrating and practicing faith and trust in God and His word.
In effect, we are saying to God and to ourselves, "I don't know why God tells me to avoid unclean meats, but I believe Him and trust that He knows best."
We learn and reinforce the spiritual lesson of doing what God says even when we do not know the reason for it. That is an important spiritual lesson, the lesson of faith and trust in what God says, and it is a principle and trait that should become part of our character to prepare us for eternity in the Kingdom of God.
When you are eating a meal at a restaurant, fellowshipping with brethren at the Feast of Tabernacles, and you are looking at the menu, rejecting foods that are unclean and choosing what is clean, remember the spiritual lesson, that just as you choose what to eat or not based on your trust and faith in God and His instructions, so we are to choose what to think about, say, and do, and what to avoid, based on God's word. "And He said, 'What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man' " (Mark 7:20-23). "But He answered and said, 'It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" ' " (Matthew 4:4).
As we are alert about what we eat, let us be alert about what we think, say, and do during the Feast and all year long.
And if you are ordering pancakes and eggs, and the menu says it comes with bacon or sausage, try asking the waitress, "Can I substitute a hamburger patty for the bacon or sausage?" It works for me (sometimes, anyway).

Atonement Represents Complete Reconciliation with God
The Two-fold Meaning of Atonement
Ask a Church of God member what Atonement teaches and represents, and he will typically answer, "the putting away of Satan at the end of this age after Christ returns". That is true. That is one of the things Atonement represents.
But it is not the whole answer. Like Passover, Atonement also represents the sacrifice of Christ.
The representation of Atonement is illustrated by the two goats described in Leviticus, chapter 16. The goat that is sacrificed represents Christ, who died to pay the penalty for our share of guilt in our sins. The goat that is released in the wilderness represents Satan, who will be put away at the end of the age. Satan will be put away for his sins and his share of the guilt for leading and tempting humans to sin. In this way, all the responsibility for our sins will be dealt with in a way that removes mankind's guilt entirely and allows us to be completely reconciled to God.
Both we and Satan share responsibility for our sins. Satan tempts man to sin and is therefore partly responsible for our sins. But we give in to Satan's temptations and therefore choose to sin, and we are responsible for our sinful choices. Atonement represents God's plan for removing sin and sin guilt from the human race. Satan's share of guilt for our sins is placed upon him, where it belongs, and Christ pays the penalty for our share of guilt for our sins. The live goat represents Satan, banished to the wilderness, removed from man, bearing his own guilt for man's and his own sins, and the goat that is killed represents Christ paying the penalty for our share of guilt for our sins. The two goats together represent God removing all guilt from the human race so we can be totally reconciled with God.
"He shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. Then Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats: one lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat. And Aaron shall bring the goat on which the Lord’s lot fell, and offer it as a sin offering. But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make atonement upon it, and to let it go as the scapegoat into the wilderness" (Leviticus 16:7-10). But putting away Satan is not all God's doing. God indeed will put Satan away at the end of this age. But we, members of God's Church, the firstfruits called in this age, also have a responsibility to put Satan and his evil influence out of our lives and minds now. We cannot escape his temptations totally, but we can do our best to avoid his sinful messages and put his temptations out of our minds. We can reject his way of thinking and his way of life. We can reject his entertainment. We can avoid his false teaching. We can avoid his false ministers and false prophets and their teaching. We can guard our minds and reject those things, to the degree we are able, that Satan uses to try to deceive us and tempt us to sin. In other words, we can reject Satan and put him out of our lives by putting sin out of our lives.
Sound familiar? It is a parallel of the Days of Unleavened Bread. The lesson of putting sin out of our lives is repeated in the Day of Atonement, just as the lesson of the sacrifice of Christ, pictured by Passover, is repeated in the Day of Atonement. It is another way God teaches the lesson. He emphasizes the lesson with repetition.
The goat that was sacrificed on the Day of Atonement reminds us of the sacrifice of Christ, pictured also by Passover. But the banishing of the live goat to the wilderness, away from the congregation of Israel, in addition to representing the putting away of Satan by God at the end of this age, reminds us that to be fully reconciled to God, we must reject Satan and resist Satan's sinful influence in our lives and put Satan's way of life and thinking out of our lives, and that is very similar to the lesson of putting sin out of our lives represented by the Days of Unleavened Bread.
In this age, we have to fight against Satan's influence in our minds and in our lives, resisting his temptations, rejecting his values and ways of thinking, avoiding his teaching and bad influences to the degree we are able. It is as if each of us must "put Satan away" in our minds. "If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell" (Matthew 5:29-30). "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you" (James 4:7). "Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body" (1 Corinthians 6:18). "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things" (Philippians 4:8). "Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth" (Colossians 3:2).
Our individual battles against Satan are pictured by the Days of Unleavened Bread. For those in the millennium and the general resurrection, God puts Satan away, pictured by Atonement. The people at that time will not have to fight Satan's temptations as we do today. They still have obey God and choose to resist temptations, but their battles will be easier without Satan and the influences of a sinful society to make their struggle harder.
So we have a harder fight, because we are the firstfruits, but our reward also will be greater.
But the ultimate lesson is the same. Satan and his way of life must be totally rejected in order that we may be completely reconciled with God. The sacrifice of God pays the penalty for our past sins. But we must overcome. Our way of life must demonstrate that we reject Satan, or God will not entrust us with eternal life.
Those who refuse that lesson, those who ultimately do not demonstrate an attitude of mind that 100% rejects Satan's way of life, will be destroyed forever in the lake of fire. Christ's sacrifice makes repentance and forgiveness possible. But Christ's sacrifice will not save us if we choose to continue to follow Satan.
God's Merciful Nature
God is merciful towards us. But why? Is He merciful towards us because we are obedient? Not exactly.
Is God merciful towards those who obey His commands? Yes. "For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him" (Psalm 103:11-13). "And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation" (Luke 1:50).
But God is merciful, not because of our obedience. God is merciful because it is His nature to be merciful.
Mercy is God's normal state, His normal frame of mind towards His creation.
But if we continue to disobey, even after we have the opportunity to repent and obey, persistent disobedience disqualifies us from God's normal mercy. He will destroy us if we do not repent.
Our trust therefore must be in God and His mercy, not our obedience. But we must obey, for if we do not obey, we will not obtain the mercy He wants to extend to us.
This may be a subtle point. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking our own obedience saves us. But obedience should be our normal state. It is God's mercy that saves us. Disobedience is a form of rejection of God's mercy.
"And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come at once and sit down to eat'? But will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink'? Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do' " (Luke 17:7-10). "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service" (Romans 12:1). "Therefore understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people" (Deuteronomy 9:6).
Obedience is only our reasonable obligation to the God who gave us life.
But if we disobey, our disobedience can disqualify us and cut us off from God's mercy which is His nature to give. So obedience is in a sense our normal, reasonable duty - it is expected, not anything special that makes us worthy. Then, God's merciful nature is in effect for us. But if we rebel, we cut ourselves off from God's normally merciful nature.
Mercy and love are not attributes of the person receiving the mercy and love. They are not earned or produced by the person receiving mercy and love. They are attributes of the one giving the mercy and love, in this case, God.
We can't make God love us. Our obedience does not make God show us mercy. God's nature is love and mercy. But our disobedience can block that mercy. God will destroy those who persist in their sins.
As long as we intend and want to overcome our sins, God will work with us and give us every opportunity. But if we harden our hearts and turn from God, He will destroy us.
"It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Hebrews 10:31). "and He repays those who hate Him to their face, to destroy them. He will not be slack with him who hates Him; He will repay him to his face" (Deuteronomy 7:10). "For our God is a consuming fire" (Hebrews 12:29). "Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off" (Romans 11:22).
God's purpose and objective is simple. He wants billions of children, and He wants them to enjoy the maximum happiness and joy for eternity. God wants 100% the best outcome, the greatest happiness forever that is possible. Not 99% the best happiness. One hundred percent.
God can produce anything. He created the universe. He can make greater and greater creations forever. There is no limit the joyful things He can continue to accomplish and produce for His children. "You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore" (Psalm 16:10).
And God knows exactly what is needed to achieve maximum happiness and joy in the universe for eternity.
What is needed is right character, and God is producing that character in those who are willing to believe, trust, and obey Him. God produces that character in those who reject Satan and Satan's way of life, those who, in the way they live their lives, "put Satan away" - those who resist Satan's temptations and reject his teachings, doctrines, entertainment, and way of thinking. As God will put Satan away from mankind literally at the beginning of the millennium, so we must put Satan out of our lives in the choices we make today. We cannot escape his temptations, not completely, in this age. But we can resist those temptations and by so doing reject Satan's way of life.
God produces right character in those who believe, trust, and obey Him in order to prepare them for eternity in His kingdom. When all of God's children have perfect, holy, righteous character in the Kingdom of God, we will be prepared for maximum peace, joy, and happiness forever in that kingdom.
But God will not compromise. God will not let someone into His kingdom who is not fully committed to God's way of life. He will not let into His kingdom someone who is sitting on the fence about obeying God. He does not want children with 99% right character and 1% sin for eternity. He wants 100% righteousness in His children as God is 100% righteous. And everyone in the Kingdom of God will be 100% righteous as God is righteous.
Those who ultimately refuse to repent and obey will be destroyed in the lake of fire. Is that cruel? No. God gave life and He has the right to take life away. He has given us temporary life, long enough to make our choice. Only those who embrace God's way of life and make it their own will be given permanent life, eternal life. The rest will be destroyed.
Yet the suffering and the loss experienced by those who are destroyed in the lake of fire is nothing in comparison with the happiness to be enjoyed by God's children forever in the Kingdom of God. There is no comparison.
One person, not fully committed to God's way of life and God's righteousness, if given eternal life anyway, would compromise the happiness that could exist in that kingdom for eternity. God will not allow that.
God will destroy those who refuse to 100% commit to God's way of life for the sake of His children who will live forever in God's kingdom, so there will be no one who might sin and corrupt the happiness we would otherwise enjoy. All eternity is at stake, and God will make sure that eternity is has happy as it can be.
God is not unmerciful to destroy sinners in the lake of fire. Rather, by destroying sinners in the lake of fire, He is showing mercy to His family in His kingdom for eternity. His objective is to protect His family for eternity from any chance of sin that could mar that happiness, even a little. He will give sinners the chance to repent and change and make it into the Kingdom of God. He will give everyone the opportunity. "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure" (Philippians 2:13).
But God will not compromise with sin, and no sinner who continues in sin will be allowed in the Kingdom of God. "He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death" (Revelation 21:7-8). "But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life" (Revelation 21:27). "Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie" (Revelation 22:14-15).
This shows God's mercy and wisdom. And in the Kingdom of God, we can rejoice that God has not compromised and that there will never be a rebellion against Him to spoil the happiness and joy of His children, forever.

The Day of Atonement - the Putting Away of Satan, Chapter 2
Ask a Church of God member what Atonement teaches and represents, and he will typically answer, "the putting away of Satan at the end of this age after Christ returns". That is true. That is one of the things Atonement represents.
But it is not the whole answer. Like Passover, Atonement also represents the sacrifice of Christ.
The representation of Atonement is illustrated by the two goats described in Leviticus, chapter 16. The goat that is sacrificed represents Christ, who died to pay the penalty for our share of guilt in our sins. The goat that is released in the wilderness represents Satan, who will be put away at the end of the age. Satan will be put away for his sins and his share of the guilt for leading and tempting humans to sin. In this way, all the responsibility for our sins will be dealt with in a way that removes mankind's guilt entirely and allows us to be completely reconciled to God.
Both we and Satan share responsibility for our sins. Satan tempts man to sin and is therefore partly responsible for our sins. But we give in to Satan's temptations and therefore choose to sin, and we are responsible for our sinful choices. Atonement represents God's plan for removing sin and sin guilt from the human race. Satan's share of guilt for our sins is placed upon him, where it belongs, and Christ pays the penalty for our share of guilt for our sins. The live goat represents Satan, banished to the wilderness, removed from man, bearing his own guilt for man's and his own sins, and the goat that is killed represents Christ paying the penalty for our share of guilt for our sins. The two goats together represent God removing all guilt from the human race so we can be totally reconciled with God.
"He shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. Then Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats: one lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat. And Aaron shall bring the goat on which the Lord’s lot fell, and offer it as a sin offering. "But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life" (Revelation 21:27). "Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie" (Revelation 22:14-15).
This shows God's mercy and wisdom. And in the Kingdom of God, we can rejoice that God has not compromised and that there will never be a rebellion against Him to spoil the happiness and joy of His children, forever.
